Access to the Flitch Way

  • With a length of 15 miles, the Flitch Way covers around a third of the breadth of Essex.
  • Start Hill to Rayne is accessible for walkers, cyclists and horse riders.
  • The section between Rayne and Braintree is open to cyclists and walkers.
  • There are 70+ access points, the majority of which are from Public Rights of Way.
  • Most sections of the Flitch Way are well surfaced and are both pushchair and wheelchair accessible.
  • The Flitch Way forms part of National Cycle Network route 16 from Great Totham to Birchanger.
  • There is no entrance fee to access the Flitch Way.

The Flitch Way is an important local community resource and goes through or close by the parishes of Braintree, Great Notley, Rayne, Felsted, Stebbing, Flitch Green, Little Dunmow, Great Dunmow, Little Canfield, Great Canfield, Takeley, Hatfield Broad Oak and Great Hallingbury.

The Flitch Way is readily accessible by public transport.  Trains run from London Liverpool Street to Braintree (via Witham), Stansted Airport or Bishops Stortford Stations.  Bus route number 133 runs between these points and includes stops at Great Dunmow, Takeley and Rayne.  The bus route broadly follows the former Stane Street B1256 road.  Please check relevant timetables before starting your journey.

Pay and display car parking is available at Braintree station (Station Approach, CM7 3QL) and Great Notley Country Park (CM77 7FS).  In addition there are small car parks at Rayne Station (CM77 6RX) and High Cross Lane East (CM6 1TH).
The Flitch Way is covered by the set of Essex Country park byelaws.
